How Do You Honor Your Parents (Exodus 20:12)
By Renee White, age 14
We are commanded by God in Exodus 20:12 to;
“Honor thy father and thy mother:
that thy days may be long upon the land
which the Lord thy God giveth thee.”
You can honor your parents in many ways. You can honor your parents by obeying them. You can also obey your parents by being thankful, and also by being responsible. These are some of the ways I can honor my parents. There are many verses in the bible that include honoring your parents. Some examples are Deuteronomy, Mark, Matthew, Luke, Colossians, and Ephesians.
First, I can honor my parents by obeying them. By obeying I will listen to what they tell me. In Colossians 3:20 it says “Children obey your parents in all things for it is well pleasing to God.” So it’s saying if you obey your parents you’re obeying God. Also it says in Ephesians “obey you parents for this is right.”
I honor my parents by being responsible. Responsibility is very important to my parents. I’m responsible because I do what I’m supposed to do. If I have a time to be in the house then I will be in by that time. That is part of honoring your parents. Showing them you can be responsible. In the bible it says many things about honoring your parents. In Matthew 15:4 it says “for God commanded, saying honor thy father and mother and he that curses his father or mother let him die the death.”
You honor your parents by being thankful for everything. One example is by being thankful for the food that goes in your stomach. Also for the roof they provide over your body and for the clothes that you wear. That’s why I say “thank you” for things my parents give me and do for me. Being thankful is what all children should be. Being thankful for the parents God gave them that love and care for them. Even for the parents that don’t work. Their real job is helping, love and caring for us. They look over us 365 days a year, 12months a year, 52weeks a year. I honor my parents because I’m thankful for my parents.
Honor is a strong word. That’s why you honor you parents. To show the strong love you have for them. Honoring someone or something is a great and respectful thing. That’s another reason why I honor my parents. They’re wonderful people who deserve to be honored. That’s why I honor my parents Emma and Timothy White and my grandmother Warnetta Johnson.
